"Inden" is a leather craft that has been passed down in Yamanashi Prefecture for over 400 years, in which patterns are applied to deerskin using lacquer and other materials.
Deerskin has a soft texture that is said to be closest to human skin, and because it is light and durable, it has been used for everyday items and weapons since prehistoric times.

During the Nara period, processing techniques such as tanning, dyeing, and smoking advanced, and leather ornaments and armor, mainly made from deerskin, were presented as tribute. The "grape arabesque dyed leather" (a national treasure owned by Todaiji Temple), which is said to date from this period, is thought to have been made by smoking deerskin, and deerskin was also used for horse equipment, armor, footwear, and other items stored in Shosoin.

During the era when the samurai rose to power, armor and helmets made using a variety of dyeing techniques adorned the brave figures of warriors. The armor and helmets that have been passed down as items associated with the Takeda clan, who ruled Kai Province, are a good example of this. The gorgeous decoration of the armor with its small cherry blossom patterned decorative leather is said to speak to the prestige of the Takeda clan, who were renowned for their bravery.
